Many people are afraid of spiders.  However, spiders are useful due to their role as predators of other pests.  In most instances, spiders are harmless to humans. The poisonous venomous Whittier spider that you might come into contact with is the black widow.

Usually, venomous Whittier spiders like the black widow aren’t going to be in your home.  When they are found in homes they are found in dark areas such as basements and garages.  More commonly, Whittier black widows are found in outdoor sheds or piles of firewood.  To protect yourself, ensure that you always use thick gloves when reaching into dark areas such as wood piles.  As you’ve likely seen, black widows can be identified by its glossy black color and red hourglass on its belly.  If you see one of these in your home or business then you should call us immediately.
